Saved by the grace of God in February, 1993, and called to ministry in the fall of the same year, Pastor Steve left behind the family farm in Fort Payne, Alabama to follow God’s path for him. That path led through a youth internship in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Later that path would lead him into full-time youth and music ministries in Alabama and Virginia. In January, 2000, he left to attend Southeastern Bible College in Wake Forest, North Carolina, where he served as youth and music minister while earning a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies.  There, he met his sweet wife, Dawn, in the fall of 2003. They married in May, 2004, and now have two children, Samuel and Sarah Grace.

While at Southeastern, he recognized God’s preparation and calling to bi-vocational pastoral ministry and served in that role for a short while in Rainsville, Alabama.  God’s leading was back to school to earn a Master’s Degree at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.  While there, Steve and Dawn enjoyed serving at Calvary Baptist in Seymour, Indiana.  After Samuel was born in 2008, Steve and Dawn moved back to Alabama with their growing family (Sarah Grace was on the way) to be nearer their aging parents.  They moved to the Gadsden area and served in churches in Attalla and Fort Payne until God opened the door in January, 2016, to serve His congregation at Steele Baptist where they simply feel “at home.”

Pastor Steve serves today bi-vocationally and has a small excavation business while Dawn works as a financial advisor.  They have a heart for missions and have been involved in many mission trips around the country and the world through the years.

Pastor Steve’s vision for Steele Baptist Church is to see it become the center of the community, being actively involved in ministering to the surrounding community in diverse ways.  Support and involvement in missions, from local to international, is a direction that SBC is moving towards.  Finding new ways to reach the world around us, near and far, with the gospel of Jesus is the heartbeat of Steele Baptist Church.

Jane has a long association with Steele Baptist Church, going back to her preschool years when her dad, Irving Welborn,  was pastor of the church.  Her dad went to other pastorates, and Jane was saved and baptized at 8 years of age while they were at Antioch Baptist Church in Whorton's Bend.  Their family returned to Steele Baptist when her dad became pastor here again in 1960.
Jane has been married to Charles Bearden for 56 years.  They have two adult children and eight grandchildren.
Jane has participated in many ministries of our church, including missions, choir, and Church Library.  She has been a teacher in Sunday School and has a love of Bible study.  As Sunday School Director, she has a desire to see every church member involved in personal and group study of God's Word.  She especially wants new believers to build a firm foundation on the truths and teachings found in the Bible.

Children's Director

Lorraine Smith

Lorraine, also known as "Miss" Lorraine, has been a part of SBC for over 64 years, with 31 of those years working in various capacities in our children’s department.

She became a Christian at the age of nine  and  has a special love for children, music and baking!

She fondly remembers her days as a child and youth at SBC and all of the love that was poured into her life and into the lives of other children by faithful leaders...SS teachers, VBS teachers, her youth leaders, Lee and Dot Gilliland, summer camps and the list goes on.

She also remembers the wonderful, sweet lady, Mrs. Dot, who lovingly took her under her “motherly wing” and taught her how to “love on children”!

She has been married to Wayne Smith for 45 years and they reside in Steele.

She desires to see children and their families become involved in our church family here at SBC and come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
